Ed Boon Shuts Down Injustice 3 Testing Rumors

Did you hear the latest Injustice 3 rumor? NetherRealm's Ed Boon sure did, and he's not having it.

The rumor mill went into overdrive this week when MP1st dug up evidence suggesting the unannounced fighting game will feature Supergirl and Batwoman as playable characters. Supergirl's no shocker—she headlined Injustice 2 nine years ago. But Batwoman? That would be a first for the mainline series.

Boon kicked things off by responding to a satirical X/Twitter post claiming NetherRealm was "partnering with Insomniac to deliver the first AAAA fighting game." Whether he caught the joke or not, his reply was classic Boon: "100% false. Next rumor please.... ;)"

Naturally, someone else tossed him a batch of rumors: that NetherRealm is testing Injustice 3, Mortal Kombat 13, and/or Mortal Kombat 9 right now. "All false," Boon shot back. Cue fan panic—did that mean Injustice 3 isn't happening?

Not so fast. Boon followed up with a clarification that keeps hope alive: "Appreciate the interest & enthusiasm. But just because a game isn't currently being tested externally doesn't necessarily mean the game isn't in development." Read that again—he's only saying it's not being tested externally right now. That's a big difference.

So where does that leave us? Exactly where we were: waiting for an official announcement, possibly at The Game Awards in December. Injustice 3 has been rumored for years, and it's even popped up on staff resumes. But it might not be called Injustice 3—maybe it's a new DC fighting game series tied into James Gunn's DCU. Gunn has said he visits Warner Bros. game studios, and in 2025 he and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran noted it'll be "a couple of years" before the first DCU games arrive. They've been hands-on with projects at NetherRealm and Rocksteady, seeing designs in early stages and offering story input.

Of course, Boon loves a good troll, so this could all be misdirection. But the simplest answer is usually right: NetherRealm's next game is likely Injustice 3, and an announcement might not be far off.
