Did you notice something missing from BioWare's goodbye message? The studio's farewell statement, which came alongside news of its closure following the recent EA buyout, listed several iconic titles—Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, and Anthem. But Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO that's been running for almost 15 years, wasn't mentioned at all. And that omission didn't sit well with the game's lead writer, Caitlin Sullivan Kelly.
Taking to X to reply to BioWare's message, Kelly wrote: "No mention of the game that's been going for almost fifteen years, that supported the studio and all of its projects with income and manpower and time (sometimes to our own detriment). Heartbreaking." Her words hit hard, especially for a game that's been a steady presence in the Star Wars universe for so long.
It's easy to see why Kelly feels that way. SWTOR has been a beloved MMO for many players, and it's served as a massive narrative anchor for the Knights of the Old Republic timeline. Some fans have even joked that the game will "outlive" Star Wars itself—which says a lot about its staying power. Given how much the MMO has contributed to BioWare over the years, a mention in the studio's farewell wouldn't have been out of place.
As for what's next for BioWare? There's some hope that its shutdown could lead to the rights for Mass Effect and Dragon Age being sold, as studio veteran Mark Darrah suggested. But EA could just as easily bury them in the vault. And if the alleged Mass Effect 5 trailer making the rounds is real, that only complicates things further. Mass Effect 5 was reportedly "something special," according to a dev, described as BioWare's response to what Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 devs "were bringing to the table."
For now, SWTOR soldiers on, and its community remains as dedicated as ever. But the snub in BioWare's goodbye is a reminder of how quickly things can change in this industry—and how important it is to honor the games that kept the lights on.
What do you think? Should BioWare have included SWTOR in its farewell message? Let us know in the comments.
