Valve Dev Accidentally Mentions 'HLX' Project, Sparks Half-Life 3 Rumors

Did Valve just accidentally confirm Half-Life 3? That's what fans are asking after a developer let slip a mysterious project name during a recent talk.

At the Game Sound Con event, Valve sound designer Mike Morasky was discussing how the studio uses high dynamic range audio. He mentioned that the upcoming game Deadlock has its own HDR audio, and then casually added that a project called "HLX" does too. Almost immediately, another Valve developer sitting next to him said, "Nice work," and followed up with, "Good job, you only said HLX once." The exchange was caught on video and quickly spread online.

For those who don't know, Morasky is a Valve veteran. He's worked on sound and music for Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Half-Life: Alyx, and Counter-Strike 2. Outside of games, he contributed visual effects to Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films and The Matrix trilogy, and he was a member of the band Steel Pole Bath Tub.

The name HLX isn't entirely new. A while back, dataminers found references to something called HLX in Valve's files, and some speculate it could be a new Half-Life game—or the long-awaited Half-Life 3. Given Valve's history of secrecy, any mention of a Half-Life-related project sends the community into a frenzy.

Of course, this isn't the first time fans have gotten excited over tiny clues. It's become something of an annual tradition for the Half-Life community to latch onto the smallest hint of a new game, only to be disappointed when nothing gets announced. But with the franchise's dedicated fanbase and the success of 2020's Half-Life: Alyx—which won GameSpot's Game of the Year—it wouldn't be surprising if Valve eventually returns to the series.

So, what do you think? Is HLX the next Half-Life game, or just another false alarm? Let us know in the comments!
