Remember 3D Pinball: Space Cadet? If you grew up poking around Windows 95 or XP, you almost certainly do. And here's some good news: Microsoft might actually bring it back.
According to a report from gazlog, Pavan Davuluri, who heads up Microsoft's Windows division, dropped the hint on the official Inside Windows podcast. He said the company is evaluating a nostalgia-driven plan that could see the classic 3D Pinball revived for Windows 11. For a whole generation of PC users, this little time-killer was a rite of passage — and it's been gone since the Windows XP era.
A quick history lesson: 3D Pinball first shipped with Windows 95 and stuck around for several versions, becoming one of those default apps everyone messed with at least once. It finally got the axe in the XP days. Why? The official story is that porting it to 64-bit systems caused serious clipping bugs. On top of that, the game's third-party source code had zero comments, so the dev team couldn't quickly diagnose or fix anything. With millions of lines of code needing work, Microsoft eventually decided it wasn't worth the hassle and pulled the plug.
The revival talk isn't coming out of nowhere. It stems from player demand bubbling up on overseas social platforms. Davuluri directly acknowledged those calls, noting that Microsoft has a long tradition of packing classic games into its operating systems. He confirmed the company has officially started evaluating a 3D Pinball comeback, though there's no word yet on when it might actually land.
Before you get too excited, there are some real strings attached. According to available info, Microsoft only holds a bundling license for the game — not the rights to distribute it separately. Years ago, the company actually finished a refurbished 32-bit version, but contractual restrictions stopped it from listing the game on the Microsoft Store on its own. So even if the revival happens, it would most likely return as built-in Windows 11 content rather than a standalone release you can buy or download separately.
That means the dream scenario is probably this: one day you fire up a fresh Windows 11 install, and there it is — that familiar table, those satisfying sound effects, waiting for you to waste just one more minute. Not a store page, not a paid download, just part of the OS like the good old days.
Would you play 3D Pinball again if Microsoft brought it back? Or is there another forgotten Windows pack-in game you'd rather see return? Let us know in the comments.
