Ever finished a Call of Duty campaign and immediately wondered, "Wait... is that it for these characters?" That's exactly the question Modern Warfare 4 players are asking right now — and Infinity Ward's answer probably isn't what you'd expect.
After the campaign's early access launch, fans have been buzzing about the fates of several major characters and whether this entry closes the book on the Modern Warfare series that kicked off back in 2019. Narrative director Jeff Negus addressed the question head-on in an interview with IGN — and he didn't exactly give a clean answer. "That's a good question, but you probably won't like my answer. I don't know," he said.
So what does that mean for you? Well, the team did set out to build a complete, conclusive-feeling story. Negus explained that Infinity Ward wanted to tie up loose threads, answer lingering questions, and push the characters into territory they've never been in before, raising both the stakes and the scale of the conflict. The campaign delivers plenty of big moments for heroes and villains alike, and the overall tone makes it one of the darker chapters in the reboot timeline. The final mission that plays during the credits has only added fuel to the "is this the end?" fire — especially when it comes to Captain Price's fate.
Here's the thing: Infinity Ward never mapped out a long-term story arc from 2019 onward. "No, we didn't have a long-term plan," Negus admitted, comparing the situation to a TV series — you make season one, the audience loves it, and only then do you get the chance to build the next season on that foundation. Even without a master blueprint, the team still looks back at past stories while thinking about the present, making each new entry feel meaningful. That approach shaped how Modern Warfare 4 handled the fallout of Modern Warfare 3's ending — particularly the consequences of Price's actions, which changed how he pursues his goals without shaking his core motivations. The alliance between Price and Valeria grew out of that same line of thinking.
Negus also shot down the idea that chunks of Modern Warfare 4 were originally meant for Modern Warfare 3, which launched three years ago. The campaign covers a lot of ground because the team was chasing two goals at once: continuing the classic characters' story and returning to the series' roots by putting you in the boots of a rank-and-file soldier in a large-scale war. Since the established characters don't quite fit that grunt's-eye view, Infinity Ward combined both approaches — old faces like Price alongside a batch of young new characters, letting you see the war from different perspectives. Both storylines orbit the same theme that's been running since 2019: everyone draws their own line based on what they need.
Meanwhile, Activision has confirmed a new Call of Duty series is in development, moving away from the Modern Warfare and Black Ops rotation — though the company hasn't said whether that means the reboot era is officially over. The campaign has earned plenty of praise, and Captain Price's voice actor, Barry Sloane, publicly thanked fans: "Thank you for all the kind words. I see them. I read them. And I am grateful... Let's allow people to enjoy the game in their own time. No Spoilers. Bravo 6 - Dark."
So, is Modern Warfare 4 the grand finale or just another chapter? Right now, not even Infinity Ward seems ready to say. Will you be picking up the campaign to see how it all plays out — and what do you think Price's fate should be?
