Sega's Official Sonic Discord Opens to Immediate Chaos

Ever thought a Sonic the Hedgehog Discord server run by Sega would be a calm, family-friendly place? Yeah, neither did anyone else. Sega went ahead and created an official Sonic Discord, inviting the blue blur's most dedicated fans to chat about the series. The reaction was instant and unanimous: Oh no.

Look, there's nothing wrong with Sonic. Plenty of us grew up playing his games and have fond memories. But the hardcore Sonic fanbase has a reputation—let's say they're a passionate bunch. While not everyone is posting about Eggman mpreg or fighting over Sonadow vs Sonamy, enough people have done so loudly enough to make everyone worry about what would happen when tens of thousands of fans share the same virtual space. As one Twitter user bluntly put it: "Why the fuck would you think this is a good idea." Yeah, that about sums it up.

Sega clearly anticipated some trouble. The server's first rule is to "keep it family friendly" and ensure messages, images, links, and videos are appropriate for "fellow fans and small woodland critters of all ages." Basically, please don't post inappropriate stuff about the cartoon hedgehogs. To enforce this, media sharing is currently restricted. In a FAQ, the official Sonic account (amusingly named johnsega1960) explained that a fan art channel will be added "in the future," but for now, images are disabled by default due to the flood of new users. You'll be able to unlock permissions in time.

So the server hasn't been flooded with cursed artwork—yet. But that hasn't stopped people from pushing the limits of "family friendly" in other ways. Within 14 minutes of the invite going live on Twitter, someone proudly declared "Eggman is hot." Another user sagely shared "Sonic pregnant." And someone asked Sega when they're confirming Eggman and Agent Stone are married—which, honestly, is a fair question.

It hasn't all been silly memes, though. Some users reported people filling the server with slurs and hateful language. A huge wave of bans followed, along with an apparent temporary lockdown where no one could send messages. Sega has since acknowledged that some users "may have been accidentally banned" automatically and promised to sort it out. Needless to say, the server's launch has been anything but smooth.

With over 78,000 people already joined at the time of writing, Sega's hands are going to be full. And frankly, it's hard to see things calming down, especially once that fan art channel opens. Will you be joining the chaos, or are you staying far away? Let us know in the comments!
