Did you hear the one about the Mass Effect TV show that just won't die? In a year where EA has closed BioWare and canceled the next Mass Effect game, you'd think the TV adaptation would be toast too. But according to a source speaking to IGN, the Prime Video series is still moving forward.
The report says all the key creative people attached to the project remain signed on. That seemingly includes Mike Gamble, the BioWare project director and executive producer who was part of the layoffs at the studio. So even as the game studio shuts its doors, the show's brain trust is apparently still in place.
For those keeping score, the Mass Effect show was first revealed back in 2021, so it's been gestating for a long while. The last update we got—back in 2025—was that Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) was serving as showrunner, with Fast & Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey on board as a writer. That's a pretty solid pedigree for a sci-fi adaptation.
Prime Video is clearly all-in on gaming. The platform is also home to the upcoming Tomb Raider and God of War shows, plus the wildly popular Fallout series, which is already coming back for a third season. So keeping Mass Effect alive fits right into their strategy.
Of course, the backdrop here is messy. EA went private via a sale to Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, with Affinity Partners and Silver Lake also part of the investor consortium. EA said it was looking for $700 million in cost savings to service the massive debt from the sale, and many feared layoffs and studio closures. Those fears materialized: BioWare is shutting down, wider layoffs are happening across the company, and development has stopped on other projects, like a new The Sims game.
It's a bittersweet situation for fans. The game series is losing its home studio and the next installment, but the TV show might just keep the spirit alive. Will you be tuning in to see what Prime Video does with the universe? What do you think—can the show succeed without BioWare?
