Guild Wars 3 Studio Head: MMOs Have Stagnated—Here's How to Fix Them

Ever feel like MMOs are stuck in a time warp? You're not alone. ArenaNet studio head Colin Johanson thinks the genre has 'stagnated,' and he's betting Guild Wars 3 can break the mold.

In a recent press demo, Johanson didn't hold back. He pointed out that many of us are still playing the same MMOs we were a decade or two ago—World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy 14, and even Guild Wars 2. While other genres have modernized and become more welcoming, MMOs have largely stood still.

That's a huge opportunity, Johanson argues. 'There's been very little new in the last decade,' he said, noting that many would-be competitors either fizzled out or got canceled before launch. MMO fans are hungry for something fresh, and ArenaNet wants to deliver with 'wild, crazy ideas.'

He's got a point. Recent big launches like New World, Lost Ark, and Throne and Liberty drew massive crowds initially, but they've since faded or shut down entirely. Other promising projects, like Riot's League of Legends MMO and Ashes of Creation, have hit major roadblocks. The genre is ripe for a shake-up.

So what's Guild Wars 3 doing differently? For starters, it's tackling the 'second job' problem. Johanson wants a game where you can make meaningful progress in short sessions, play with a controller, and cut down on prep time. No more feeling like you need to carve out hours just to log in.

'If you don't have a couple of hours available, you're just not going to play an MMO,' he said. Instead, Guild Wars 3 aims to respect your time, letting you take breaks between expansions without falling behind. 'You can set this game down and go play a bunch of other games and come back when the next expansion comes out—and that's okay.'

This isn't just talk. Johanson previously confirmed the game will have no subscription fee and no 'hidden' subscriptions like battle passes. It's all about being approachable for busy gamers.

Guild Wars 3 is coming to PC and PS5, with a beta planned for Fall 2027. No release date yet, but if it delivers on this vision, it could be the breath of fresh air MMOs desperately need.

What do you think? Is the genre stagnant, and will Guild Wars 3 be the game to fix it? Let us know!
