Ever wondered why the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy feels so packed? Director Naoki Hamaguchi has a simple answer: it had to be. In a recent interview with EDGE magazine, Hamaguchi revealed that making each game a satisfying, complete experience was "non-negotiable" from the start.

"Even as a multi-part series, providing a complete experience in each individual game was a non-negotiable premise from the very beginning," he told EDGE (via GamesRadar). "The biggest thing to avoid in a multi-part series is having the creators think 'there's more to come, so it's fine to stop here for now.'" That mindset, he says, would have been a recipe for disaster.

But if each game is supposed to be complete, why did Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth skip iconic locations like Wutai and Rocket Town? Hamaguchi explains that it wasn't a creative choice but a practical one. "When we looked at the overall plot and gameplay experience of Rebirth, we determined that depicting those elements at the same time would have made the game too dense with information, disrupting the story's pacing and the focus of the second game." Those locations are confirmed for the final part, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.

So what can you expect from Revelation? It's the finale, so Hamaguchi and his team likely have no choice but to deliver everything. That might explain why he said it can "easily" take over 100 hours to complete. And the world is yours to explore from the start—you'll control the Highwind and can go almost anywhere. If you'd rather focus on the story, a new automatic leveling function ensures you're always at the required level, even with minimal side content.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation launches on April 8th, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. With such a massive scope, it's shaping up to be one of the most ambitious remakes ever. Will you be picking it up? Let us know in the comments!
