Wolverine Sales Soar Despite Mixed Reviews

Marvel's Wolverine topped September's US sales chart, setting a new record for Sony-published games. It's a reminder not to trust social media buzz.

Wolverine Sales Soar Despite Mixed Reviews

Did you write off Marvel's Wolverine because of the mixed chatter online? Well, the sales data says you might be in the minority. Despite a lukewarm reception from some players, the game just posted some seriously impressive numbers.

According to new data from Circana, Marvel's Wolverine was the best-selling game of September in the US. It also delivered the highest launch-month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2 back in February 2024. That's a big win for a game that was only available on a single platform.

And it wasn't exactly a quiet month. Wolverine had to fend off competition from Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, The Blood of Dawnwalker, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, yet it still took the top spot. In fact, eight of the top ten best-selling games in September were new releases, making the win even more notable.

The success didn't stop at software. PS5 hardware dollar sales jumped by 43%, giving Sony its highest hardware dollar share in a month since May 2025. Of course, a PS5 costing more today than it did last year probably didn't hurt.

Circana's Mat Piscatella also noted that Wolverine debuted as 2026's 11th best-selling game overall. Estimates suggest it's sold 1.9 million units as of September 18, with physical sales accounting for 799,000 of those. That's a solid number, though it's not quite enough to crack the top 10 best-selling games of 2026 in the US.

For context, NBA 2K26 currently leads the yearly chart, followed by Resident Evil Requiem, with 007 First Light, MLB: The Show 26, and Pokemon: Pokopia rounding out the top spots. Wolverine also managed to break a live-service stranglehold on the PlayStation charts, ranking seventh on Circana's Top 10 Titles by weekly active users.

GameSpot's review scored the game an 8/10, with editor-at-large Tamoor Hussain calling it a "fun but forgettable" experience. But forgettable or not, the sales don't lie. So next time you see a wave of negative posts, remember: social media isn't always the full picture.

What do you think? Did you pick up Marvel's Wolverine, or are you waiting for a price drop?
