Ever dreamed of seeing Night City on the big screen? Well, it's officially happening. Just one day after Paramount put a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie into development, CD Projekt Red's co-CEO Michał Nowakowski took to Twitter to share his excitement. "We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise," he said. "We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time."
CDPR won't just be watching from the sidelines. The studio will serve as co-producers alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the live-action Transformers movies. That's a solid partnership, and it means the game's creators will have a heavy hand in bringing their vision to Hollywood.
If you haven't played Cyberpunk 2077, here's the quick rundown: it's set in a fictional California metropolis called Night City and follows a mercenary named V (Vincent or Valerie). V is accompanied via biochip by Keanu Reeves' rockstar-turned-terrorist Johnny Silverhand. When the Silverhand chip starts rewriting V's consciousness, the two must work together to save each other and take on the powerful Arasaka Corporation.
No plot or casting details have been released yet, but one actor is already throwing his hat in the ring. Smile star Kyle Gallner replied to the announcement by posting a picture of himself with a buzzcut just like V, writing, "Take me to Night City." Fans seem to love the idea. One replied, "Thank you for listening to us! We've been manifesting for so long," while another added, "This would be perfect casting."
This isn't the first time the Cyberpunk franchise has hit screens. In 2022, Netflix released the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, also produced by CD Projekt Red. The first season followed an Arasaka Academy student living in the violent Night City. A second season, set to return on October 20, will focus on a new set of characters.
