Bungie Reveals Marathon's Big Comeback Plan

Ever feel like a game just isn't clicking? That's been Marathon's story since it launched in March 2026. But Bungie isn't giving up. Today, the studio finally pulled back the curtain on a massive roadmap designed to give you more ways to play—and hopefully, more reasons to stay.

The headline? The extraction modes you know (or love to hate) aren't going anywhere. Instead, Bungie is adding a Team Deathmatch mode and new PvE experiences that sound a lot like Destiny. For anyone who's been craving that familiar Bungie gunplay without the extraction pressure, this is huge. They're also expanding Perimeter, the game's tutorial zone, to feel more like a full-fledged area. The goal is simple: reduce friction for new players and let you ease into the hardcore extraction mode at your own pace.

But don't expect everything at once. Bungie laid out a clear timeline. First up, a Nightfall refresh lands in October. Then, in December, the Symbiosis update brings Marathon's first permanent PvE mode alongside Team Deathmatch. Bungie is keeping details on that PvE mode under wraps for now, promising more info closer to launch.

March 2027 will mark Marathon's one-year anniversary, and Bungie is planning a much larger update that ties all these modes together. There's also a new onboarding experience, which was previewed in a behind-the-scenes documentary that dropped today. Oh, and a giant Tick Queen. Because why not?

All of this sounds like a promising lifeline for a game that's struggled to find its footing. Will it be enough to bring players back? Only time will tell. But Bungie isn't putting all its eggs in one basket. The studio is also returning to Destiny, starting with bringing vaulted content back to Destiny 2. And it sounds like the community's passion has convinced Bungie to stick with Destiny long-term. Developer Poria Torkan put it plainly: "Bungie wouldn't be what it is today without it. It's the foundation upon which everything else rests, and we are absolutely not done with Destiny."
