Ever wonder what really goes on behind the scenes at a studio like Bungie? Former Marathon game director Joe Zeigler just gave us a peek, and it's not all smooth sailing.
In an interview with PCGamer, Zeigler talked about the challenges of getting Marathon over the line. "I found this project was - it had some areas where there were definitely some ideas about where we were going, but there were a lot of disagreements across the place," he said. Part of his job was to bring those ideas together and ask, "Hey, what is the cohesive place you want to go to? And how do we get there?" Once they landed on a direction, he could help drive it.
Zeigler first joined Bungie in an advisory role before stepping into the leadership position on Marathon. With years of directing League of Legends under his belt, he knows a thing or two about keeping a live-service game on track. As a longtime fan of the studio—dating back to Myst—he was eager to dive into the infrastructure. He noted that Bungie operates in two distinct lanes: "One is this world where there's a lot of legacy to live up to, which is a lot of pressure. But there's also this other side of it, which is that it's a very egoless company." The team is always looking to improve, often by bringing in new people to help them figure out what they're missing. That's how he ended up working there for almost four years, exiting after Marathon launched.
Sadly, things are murky for Bungie right now. Marathon isn't doing the expected business, and Destiny 2 is purely on support. With Xbox's restructuring in full swing, it's a wait-and-see situation for the years ahead. For now, Zeigler is working on an unannounced new project.
Bungie has admitted that Marathon "did not reach as many players as we had hoped," and shared plans to evolve the game for "a sustainable future" while committing to Destiny. It's a tough spot for a studio with such a storied history.
What do you think about the challenges Bungie is facing? Will you be sticking with Marathon to see how it evolves? Let us know in the comments!
