Resident Evil Movie Boosts RE2 Remake PS5 Sales by 64%

Did you catch Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie in theaters? If so, you're not alone—and you might have even helped boost game sales without realizing it.

According to data from Alinea Analytics, Cregger's film adaptation didn't just dominate the box office; it also sent players running back to the games that inspired it. In the week after the movie hit theaters, Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 (2023) saw huge spikes in PS5 sales. RE2 Remake jumped a whopping 64%, while RE4 (2023) rose 54%. When you add Steam copies into the mix, those numbers climb even higher—up an additional 11% and 14%, respectively.

On PlayStation, the revenue boost was even more staggering: RE2 Remake's revenue shot up 80%, and RE4 (2023) saw an 84% increase. Now, it's worth noting that Capcom slashed prices on both games about 10 days before the movie's release, so discounts played a big role. But according to Rhys Elliot of Alinea Analytics, Austin Abrams' performance as Bryan in the film also moved the needle, drawing in new and returning players.

Daily active users across several Resident Evil titles climbed after September 18. RE2 Remake saw the largest surge—a 48% jump from around 78,000 to 116,000 daily players. That makes perfect sense since Cregger's movie runs parallel to the events of RE2. Resident Evil 4 (2023) players increased by 24%, Resident Evil 3 Remake by 25%, and Resident Evil Requiem by 20%.

Speaking of Requiem, that game recently passed $500 million in lifetime revenue, with a massive 91% of sales coming from PlayStation and Steam. It also helped drive PlayStation and PC sales in Japan during the first half of 2026, pushing numbers up 13% to 21 million copies sold.

And the good news doesn't stop there. With a Code Veronica remake on the horizon, Resident Evil fans have plenty to look forward to. Capcom has had a stellar year overall, with three highly rated releases: Onimusha: Way of the Sword earned critical acclaim, while Pragmata surprised both critics and casual players with its innovative gameplay and emotional story.
