Sony May Rethink Killing Physical Discs After Massive Dev Survey

Sony might not be ready to say goodbye to physical discs just yet.

According to well-known hardware insider Moore's Law is Dead (MLID), Sony recently sent out an industry survey on an unprecedented scale to game developers, asking for their thoughts on ditching physical game discs. The survey didn't put the question bluntly, though — instead it tactfully asked studios whether no longer releasing physical games would cause business problems, quietly gathering developers' concerns about cutting the disc business.

So why is Sony suddenly asking? One big reason: Marvel's Wolverine is still selling well in physical form. That success has apparently pushed Sony to take developers' worries more seriously.

If the survey comes back with a flood of negative feedback, Sony may consider revising — or even scrapping — its plan to move away from physical discs entirely.

It's a notable shift in tone, especially as the industry has been inching toward an all-digital future for years. But discs clearly still matter to plenty of players and studios alike, and Sony seems to be listening.

Nothing is confirmed yet, and this all comes from a single insider report. Still, if the survey results lean heavily against going digital-only, it could be a real turning point for how the next generation of games gets sold.
