Ever grinded through a Diablo 4 dungeon, leveled up a few times, grabbed a shiny new weapon... and still felt like the monsters were hitting just as hard as before? You're not alone, and Blizzard seems to have noticed.
According to the source, Diablo 5 will "take a somewhat different approach" to Diablo 4's monster level scaling. The goal? Making sure your character feels noticeably stronger as you progress through the game.
If you played a lot of Diablo 4, you know the deal. Monster level scaling keeps enemies roughly in line with your character's level, which keeps things challenging no matter where you go. But it can also create that weird feeling where all your leveling and loot hunting doesn't translate into the power fantasy you'd expect. You hit harder, sure, but so do the demons.
Blizzard apparently wants to fix that in the next installment. The studio's stated aim is for leveling up and finding new items to have an immediate, tangible impact on combat. In other words, when you ding or snag a better piece of gear, you should feel it right away, not just see bigger numbers on a stat sheet.
That's a pretty meaningful shift in philosophy. Diablo has always been about the loop of killing monsters, getting loot, and getting stronger. If that loop doesn't deliver a real sense of escalation, some of the magic fades. So it makes sense that Blizzard is looking at how scaling fits into the power fantasy for the sequel.
To be clear, we don't have specifics yet on exactly how Diablo 5 will handle scaling differently, or when we'll see it in action. The source gives us the direction, not the details. But it's a promising sign that the team is thinking about how progression should feel, not just how it should be balanced.
For now, it's a wait-and-see situation. But if Blizzard pulls it off, your future Nephalem (or whatever you'll be in Diablo 5) might actually feel like the unstoppable demon-slaying machine you've been building toward.
What do you think? Is Diablo 4's monster scaling a problem for you, or do you like the constant challenge? Will you be picking up Diablo 5 when it eventually arrives?
