Sony Skips CES 2027, Ending Decades-Long Streak

Did you know Sony has been a fixture at CES since 1967? Well, that streak is about to end. Sony has confirmed it won't be attending CES 2027, which takes place January 6-9 in Las Vegas. That means no PlayStation news directly from Sony at the show.

The company told Bloomberg it made the decision after a strategic evaluation of its approach to "events and communications based on the needs and priorities of our diverse business." Basically, Sony is putting more focus on entertainment—games, anime, films, and music—while CES is primarily a technology show.

So what PlayStation announcements have we gotten at CES before? Sony's CES appearances typically included a keynote with executives and creative leaders discussing upcoming technologies. While the biggest PlayStation news usually dropped at dedicated events, CES still delivered some memorable moments.

Remember the PS5 logo reveal at CES 2020? Then-PlayStation boss Jim Ryan showed off the logo, and fans roasted Sony for it since it was the most predictable logo ever. The juicier details like release date, price, and specs were saved for later. At CES 2022, Sony unveiled PlayStation VR2 and Horizon: Call of the Mountain. More recently, Sony used CES to announce transmedia adaptations, including Horizon and Helldivers movies.

Other gaming giants have had their CES moments too. Microsoft revealed the original Xbox with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at CES 2001, and Nintendo famously showed the first version of the NES at CES 1984 as the Advanced Video System prototype.
