Mass Effect TV Show: Everything We Know So Far

Amazon's live-action Mass Effect series is still in the works despite BioWare's closure. Here's what we know about the plot, crew, and release window.

Mass Effect TV Show: Everything We Know So Far

Ever wondered what it'd be like to hop in the Normandy and explore the galaxy on your TV screen? Well, Amazon's live-action Mass Effect series is still on the way—even after the shocking news that EA shut down BioWare and canceled Mass Effect 5. So if you're a die-hard fan or just curious about Amazon's next game adaptation after Fallout, you're in the right place.

The show was announced back in 2021, and it's still in pre-production. Filming hasn't started yet, so we're in for a wait. A previous Production Weekly list hinted at a Q4 2026 production start, but there's been no new update on it moving out of the writers' room. With all the special effects needed for a sci-fi epic, I personally don't see it releasing before 2028 at the earliest. Plus, the team behind Fallout is also working on Mass Effect, and Fallout season 3 is eyeing a 2027 release, so that timeline makes sense.

Now, don't expect a straight adaptation of the games. The show will tell a brand-new story set after the original trilogy. In a 2025 blog post, Mass Effect boss Mike Gamble explained: "The writers' room is going strong, and we've got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game. The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe's timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy. It won't be a retread of Commander Shepard's story – because after all … that's YOUR story, isn't it?" That approach mirrors Fallout's successful formula, but it does mean we won't see Shepard's iconic fight against the Reapers. Hopefully, the new story still packs the same action-packed punch.

Behind the scenes, there are some big names attached. Fast & Furious 9 writer Daniel Casey is on board, and Doug Jung (Star Trek: Beyond, Mindhunter) will serve as showrunner. Mike Gamble is executive producing alongside former Marvel Studios producer Ari Arad and Karim Zreik. And in a reassuring move, Casey confirmed that the team behind Amazon's Fallout series will also help bring Mass Effect to life. That's a good sign for quality.

As for the cast, no names have been announced yet—which makes sense since we're not in production. But a few stars have expressed interest in the past, so maybe we'll get some surprises. For now, we'll just have to wait and see.

What do you think about a Mass Effect show set after the trilogy? Are you excited, or would you rather see Shepard's story adapted? Let us know in the comments!
