Sekiro Anime Apologizes for Movie Cuts, TV Version Coming 2027

Well, this is a twist worthy of a FromSoftware boss fight. The Sekiro anime movie that had fans sharpening their katanas in frustration just got a big apology from the people behind it.

Sekiro: No Defeat is a theatrical anime adaptation of FromSoftware's beloved action game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, co-produced by Kadokawa and FromSoftware. It hit Japanese theaters on September 4. While its combat choreography earned some praise, the film took heat for its messy pacing and for drastically rewriting the original game's story.

Today, according to Japanese outlet Game*Spark, the anime's official team admitted the project was never meant to be a movie at all. It was originally planned as a full TV anime series. They apologized for the frustration this caused and revealed that an 8-episode TV version will air in January 2027.

Producer Tetsushi Suzuki explained the situation: "This project originally started with the goal of being a full 8-episode TV anime series. However, as production moved forward, we felt an increasingly strong desire to let everyone experience this work's overwhelming visuals and sound on the big screen first, so we decided to release it in theaters as a compiled film version."

He added: "We sincerely apologize for the fact that the currently screening film is actually a compiled version, and that we had not informed everyone about the TV anime series beforehand."

The team also teased that the TV version will be a richer experience than the movie, with brand-new material. "The TV anime series will include scenes and shots not featured in the film, and will be re-edited based on the story depicted in the movie, delivering a work with a different experience and charm to viewers every week," the official statement said. "Whether you've already seen the film or are encountering this work for the first time through the TV anime, we hope you look forward to it."

So if the movie left you feeling like you'd been stabbed in the back by Owl, there's a chance the full series will patch things up. The film is out now in Japan, and the TV version lands in January 2027.
