Jagex apologizes after RuneScape Reignited backlash, re-evaluating the plan to split the MMO into fresh-economy worlds that would force veterans to restart.

RuneScape Reignited Backlash: Jagex Apologizes, Rethinks Plan

Did you hear the one about the MMO that tried to reset its most loyal players? Yeah, that didn't go over well. Jagex, the studio behind RuneScape, is officially rethinking its controversial RuneScape Reignited plan after an uproar from the community. The announcement at RuneFest was meant to be a big moment, but it quickly turned into an apology tour.

In a new blog post, Jagex doesn't hold back: "We are re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited. Let's not mince words here. We have made you, as existing players, feel like you are no longer our focus. That's entirely on us and of our own making, and it's only right we open by saying sorry." That's about as direct as it gets.

So what was Reignited? The idea was to fork RuneScape (not Old School RuneScape) into fresh worlds with new economies and leaderboards, essentially a relaunch. The trailer even promised "Treasure Hunter is gone," pitching a clean slate free from pay-to-win. But for veterans, that meant starting over completely if they wanted to join the new worlds, leaving their years of progress behind. And in a game all about long-term account progression, that stung.

Jagex still believes a fresh start has appeal: "An option to play with a fresh economy and progression is a big draw for new and returning players. We've seen its potential play out with the reach of the announcement and intent to play comments across social media, which have far exceeded our initial expectations." But they admit they missed the mark on honoring veterans: "We missed our mark on making Veterans a clearer part of this idea. Not just in the execution, but how we revere your accomplishments, champion your legacy and ensure you benefit from every player who comes through the door."

The community's concerns were loud and clear, and Jagex listed them: veterans feeling they no longer matter, new players being prioritized, veteran worlds atrophying, community fragmentation, veterans being seen as "tainted," restrictions on interaction between veteran and Reignited characters, untradeable items and cosmetics being locked away, pressure to restart to stay relevant, and the need to pay for a separate subscription. Players even protested by sharing screenshots of canceled memberships.

Now Jagex says it's "exploring a heavy set of revisions to Reignited based on your feedback," including "more ways for the progress of a Veteran to remain intact and be represented meaningfully" and "ensuring that a hard split in community does not persist." They're also looking at membership options, acknowledging that paying for a separate sub doesn't feel good. "It all ties together, but we ultimately want to remove friction that our veteran players may have engaging with or co-existing alongside Reignited," the post says. "This is hugely important to us and is something we will keep coming back to."

It's a tough needle to thread: how do you relaunch a game without alienating the people who've kept it alive? Jagex hasn't committed to specifics yet, but they're clearly feeling the heat. What do you think—can Reignited be saved, or is this a sign to jump ship? Let us know in the comments.
