Have you noticed way more vampire games on Steam lately? You're not alone. One data enthusiast dug into the numbers and found a surprising trend: vampire games are on the rise, and it might be a sign of tough economic times.
After games like Redfall in 2023, titles such as Vampire Survivors, V Rising, Nighthawks, Moonlight Peaks, and Blood of Dawnwalker started popping up everywhere. The author manually sifted through 1,213 Steam games with the Vampires tag, collecting release dates and first appearance data from SteamDB. The result? A clear upward trend in vampire game releases.
In 2016, only four vampire games launched on Steam. By 2026, that number had skyrocketed to 65—and more are on the way. The sharpest increase came in the last six years: in 2020, the highest number of vampire games in a single quarter was six; in 2026, it hit 24. Developers are also listing more vampire projects: nine first appeared in SteamDB's archive in 2016, compared to 99 last year.
Of course, Steam's overall releases have exploded too, from 9,634 in 2020 to 21,263 in 2025. But the percentage of vampire games has also been trending upward, especially in the last six years, despite a drop in mid-2025. It's still less than 1 in 100 games, but in some recent quarters, the share was more than double what it was at the start of the decade.
The author even created a "Vampire Menace Rating™" to measure vampire game mindshare, though it's a bit tongue-in-cheek. The trend line climbs slightly, and when compared to Dracula's Castle from Castlevania, the implications are "chilling." But the core finding stands: vampire games are multiplying.
So why does this matter? The author suggests it could be a recession indicator—when the economy feels dire, developers and players gravitate toward stories of bloodsucking aristocrats. It's a fun theory, backed by some serious spreadsheet work.
What do you think? Are vampire games a sign of the times, or just a bloody coincidence? Will you be picking up any of these undead titles?
