Remember the sleepy town of Inaba? You'll be heading back there soon, but this time it's got a serious glow-up. Persona 4: Revival is coming early next year, and from what we've played, it's looking like a loving remaster that honors the original while adding some modern flair. But does it fix what needed fixing? Let's dive in.
Visually, Atlus is killing it again. The menus are slick and pay homage to the original, while the whole game leans into that analog TV aesthetic. Environments are richer, character models look great in 3D, and there are brand-new anime cutscenes mixed with 3D-animated sequences. If you loved the style of Persona 5 or Persona 3: Reload, you'll feel right at home.
The audio side is solid too. The voice cast brings the beloved Persona 4 gang to life, even if some voices are new. They capture the energy and tone of the originals, so fans won't be disappointed.
Now, how does it play? Combat has a couple of new tricks. The Baton Pass from Persona 5 makes its return, letting you chain attacks for extra damage. And there's a new mechanic called Prime Time. Your meter fills over time, and when it's full, you can unleash a few turns where abilities cost no SP or HP. You can even finish with a Showtime attack. It's a cool ace up your sleeve for tough fights.
But here's the thing: Prime Time doesn't feel like a game-changer. It's flashy, sure, but it doesn't dramatically shake up the combat. And honestly, I'm a bit wary. Persona remakes often add mechanics that make the game easier. Prime Time isn't a win button, but it's not an incredible new feature either. It's just... there.
Still, this is very much Persona 4 Golden with a fresh coat of paint and a few new toys. That's not a bad thing. The original is a classic for a reason, and sometimes you don't need to fix what isn't broken. The question is whether Atlus has any surprises up its sleeve for when the game drops early next year.
