Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons finally shows off its gameplay, and it's more Witcher than D&D tabletop. Check out the new trailer and details.

Warlock: D&D Gameplay Trailer Ditches Tabletop for Fast-Paced Action

Remember when Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons was announced at The Game Awards 2025 with that epic heavy metal trailer? Yeah, that was cool. But we haven't seen much since. Well, now we finally got a proper look at the game during Gamescom Opening Night Live, and guess what? It's not your typical D&D adventure.

The new trailer reveals third-person gameplay that focuses heavily on fast-paced spell-slinging and combat, rather than the role-playing and tabletop mechanics you might expect from a D&D game. It's giving us major Witcher vibes, with dark fantasy visuals and snappy spellcasting that looks pretty darn fun. But if you were hoping for a game that faithfully replicates the D&D tabletop experience, you might be a bit disappointed. Also, main character Katri seems to have an endless supply of spell slots, which might leave some purists scratching their heads.

The trailer also gives us a peek at the game's setting. It looks like Katri will be journeying through Ravenloft's Domains of Dread, and we catch a glimpse of Darkon, the largest and most powerful of these domains. Fingers crossed we get to see Darklord Azalin make an appearance!

If you're not familiar with Katri, she's the game's protagonist, and you'll always play as her. But you'll meet other characters and can form alliances with them along the way. And here's a cool tidbit: Maggie Robertson, the voice behind Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil: Village and Orin the Red in Baldur's Gate 3, is voicing Tasha in Warlock. You know Tasha, right? The D&D icon also known as Iggwilv, Zybilna, and The Witch Queen? She's a super powerful archfey and creator of Prismeer. In Warlock, she serves as Katri's patron, granting her immense power in exchange for obedience.

This isn't Invoke Studios' first D&D rodeo, though. They were previously known as Tuque Studios and made the 2021 D&D: Dark Alliance reboot, which wasn't exactly a critical darling. But they're back with Warlock, and it's slated for a 2027 release.

So, what do you think? Are you excited for a more action-focused D&D game, or were you hoping for something closer to the tabletop experience? Let us know in the comments!
