Ever wonder how much it costs to lock down a legendary game creator? Apparently, less than you'd think—at least for Microsoft. The Xbox maker reportedly snagged Hideo Kojima's Physint for a price that's "substantially below what Xbox would typically spend to develop a premium game." That's according to a New York Times profile of new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. So while the exact number remains a mystery, it's clear Microsoft landed a sweetheart deal for what's expected to be a full-price, triple-A spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.
How did this happen? Kojima pitched Physint to Sharma after Sony canceled the previously PlayStation-exclusive project. In the NYT piece, Sharma had a rare moment of speechlessness when discussing the deal. She laughed at the idea of apologizing to Sony, then shrugged and said she was happy Kojima chose to work with Xbox. The agreement also includes film and TV rights—so this isn't just about a game. It's about building an entire franchise.
Kojima himself told IGN that Microsoft was "not thinking of just funding a game. They're thinking about movies and anime. It's more about the IP. Let's create a new IP. And that's bigger in scale, so to speak. And not many other game publishers or game developers have that kind of vision." That vision means we could see a Physint live-action movie (imagine it going up against the Metal Gear Solid movie!), an anime, and who knows what else.
Of course, this all went down after Sony reportedly had concerns about Death Stranding's success, as well as Physint's development timeline, budget, and platform strategy—according to Bloomberg. Kojima Productions responded with a statement, saying, "Make no mistake, this was a serious situation for the studio with a range of potentially significant implications. While we recognise that the article may have caused alarm, we want to reassure you all, for the record: that the studio is in a healthy, profitable state, development for Physint continues to move forward with Xbox, and our relationship with PlayStation remains strong."
So what does this mean for you? Well, if you're a Kojima fan, you're getting a new IP backed by Xbox with the potential for movies and anime. That's a lot to look forward to. But don't hold your breath for a release date—Physint remains without a release window. It's expected after the launch of OD, Kojima's next game for Xbox.
In the meantime, we'll be here wondering just how low that budget really was. And whether Sony is kicking itself for letting this one go. What do you think about Xbox's savvy deal? Will you be picking up Physint when it eventually drops? Let us know in the comments!
