Ever wonder why Dragon Age: The Veilguard didn't quite hit the mark? According to a former BioWare lead, it's because EA demanded yearly releases from the studio. Mark Darrah, who worked on every Dragon Age game, recently broke down the troubled development in a YouTube video. He pointed to stretched senior staff, constant delays, and the pressure to fit into EA's annualization strategy.
Darrah explained that the project ran without its most senior leadership when he was on Anthem from 2017 to 2019. That left a gap that hurt the game's direction. On top of that, the game's release date kept shifting, but always in small increments. "The game spent a lot of time really close to its perceived release date," Darrah said. "The game changed release dates a lot of times, and the consequence of that is that the team always was quite close to its current release date."
This meant the team never had the chance to step back and rethink things. "There was never a time when the project was way in the future," Darrah recalled, "and things could be brought back, looked back, burned down, and looked at in a brand new light." Essentially, they were always in crunch mode, trying to hit a deadline that was just around the corner.
But why the constant delays? Darrah points to EA's desire to publish something from BioWare every year. At one point, BioWare's slate included Dragon Age: Inquisition, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age 4, all planned for yearly releases from 2013 onward. That obviously didn't happen. Delays on each game created a domino effect, ultimately pushing The Veilguard to late 2024, where it launched to a muted response.
Now, the future of both BioWare and the Dragon Age series is uncertain. Mass Effect 5 is reportedly in the works, but we've heard next to nothing for years. As for Dragon Age, a roaring return seems unlikely anytime soon. It's a tough pill to swallow for fans who remember the series' glory days.
So, what do you think? Could BioWare have avoided this if EA hadn't pushed for yearly releases? Or is there more to the story? Let us know in the comments below!
