Ever wonder what happens to a game after it gets canceled? Usually, it just disappears. But sometimes, a hero swoops in. That's exactly what happened with Gods With Badges, a narrative-driven tactics game that was canceled by its original developer, Artificer, and then saved by Strange Scaffold.
The game was revealed at today's Triple-i Initiative showcase. It follows Harrow McClellan, a disgraced police officer returning to duty in the dystopian city of Scarhelm. Originally called Hard Justice, the project began at Artificer, the Devolver Digital-owned studio behind Minos, Sumerian Six, and Showgunners. But it didn't pan out and almost never saw the light of day.
Enter Strange Scaffold, the studio behind El Paso, Elsewhere. They're spearheading an initiative called Project Share, which encourages developers to share original code so other studios can riff on it. This previously helped enable another Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion game, and now it's saved an Artificer project from cancellation. Gods With Badges took the work already completed by Artificer and reinterpreted it "through Strange Scaffold's distinctive creative lens."
Studio Head Xalavier Nelson Jr. said he is "deeply grateful to the original developers at Artificer for trusting us with their project, and can't wait for people to see what we've built on this complex, exciting foundation." That's a classy move, and it shows how sharing can lead to new life for abandoned ideas.
So what's the game actually like? Each encounter starts with choice-driven conversations, but they can devolve into isometric, turn-based combat. You can even turn off your bodycam to gain access to more combat abilities, though that will obviously affect how the narrative plays out. It sounds like it'll tackle heavy subjects like police brutality and the role of law enforcement in an increasingly dystopian world.
Gods With Badges is set to release on PC sometime in 2027. That's a while away, but given the pedigree behind it, it's definitely one to watch. Will you be picking this up when it launches? Let us know in the comments!
